FAQ

WHY CRUISE?

Endless choices and hassle-free travel with the perfect balance of relaxation and exciting ports of call, while only having to unpack once! Cruising is remarkably affordable too when you consider that all of your food, room service and entertainment is included. It really is all about choices - you can choose to stay totally busy or you can relax by the pool and read a good book...it's all O.K.

You can stretch the budget by choosing a lower level stateroom or shoot the wad and book a penthouse - or anything in between. Most ships offer multiple cabin options and a wide range of prices.

Frankly, I was less than enthusiastic when "forced" to go on my first cruise more than 20 years ago. I was not at all interested in being in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by strangers, with nothing to do - shoot me! I was so wrong and I encourage everyone to get out there and try cruising, you'll be glad you did. You can thank me later!

If you just cannot pull the trigger on a cruise, we happily arrange any and all vacation options.

HOW DO I CHOOSE THE RIGHT CRUISE?

That's where we come in! Tell us what you are looking for and we will match you with a ship and an itinerary. The range of choices is huge - from ginormous (5000 + passengers) to intimate (under 100). The larger ships are destinations unto themselves (see our blog about Oasis of the Seas) with an incredible array of things to do. These ships are fabulous for families...the kids and grandkids will think they are in heaven! And the food and service is surprisingly excellent. The more intimate ships tend to cost a bit more, but offer an even higher level of attentive service.

As far as where you can go, the answer is...just about anywhere. Antarctica, Alaska, Africa, South America, Australia/New Zealand, Canada/New England, Baltic, Mediterranean, Tahiti, Panma Canal, Caribbean, Mexico, river cruises in Europe, Russia, Egypt and China...you name it. There are cruises that go around the world in about 100 days or you can take a weekend 3-day cruise. Let us know what's on your wish list and we will help you find something that works for you and your budget.

WHY SHOULD I USE AN AGENT, CAN'T I GET A BETTER DEAL IF I BOOK IT MYSELF?

If you are just booking airfare, then by all means go for it - an agent can't get any better deal (nor do they make any commission!). But, a cruise is a completely different animal, with many details to be worked out that make a trained professional an indispensible asset. You will not get a better deal by booking directly or on the Internet - we can almost always match any rate - in fact, with our association with American Express (America's Vacation Center/Avoya Travel) we are able to lock in group rates that are often not available to individuals. Plus, we can offer value-added amenities and credits that would not be available to you otherwise. If it doesn't cost anything and you get better value, why wouldn't you use an agent?

WHY SHOULD I BOOK WITH PT CRUISES?

Because not only do we have access to the best deals, but we offer "knock-your-socks-off" service. We have been in the travel business for more than 30 years combined and have seen or sailed on most every cruise line. With us you are not just a number, you are family. We watch your back, we're available evenings and weekends and, unlike the big companies, you can always speak with the same agent. The bottom-line is that we know our stuff and we care. It's as simple as that

IS MY DEPOSIT REFUNDABLE?

Yes (with a couple of notable exceptions), your deposit is fully refundable up until final payment. (This makes it a very good idea to reserve early as cruises tend to fill up well in advance!). We always send a copy of the cancellation policy, so that you know the rules and penalties.

DOES PT CRUISES HAVE A CANCELLATION FEE?

No. Any penalty would come from the vendor, never from us.

WILL I NEED A PASSPORT?

It is always a good idea to have a passport and to keep it current. The rules keep changing, but sooner or later you will need a passport to go anywhere outside of the U.S.

IS TRAVEL INSURANCE REQUIRED?

No, it is strictly optional.
Travel insurance basically is intended to reimburse you for penalties incurred from your travel provider if you have to cancel your cruise for a medical reason within the penalty period which begins just after final payment in most cases.

To qualify as a medical reason your doctor has to tell you not to travel and sign a claim form stating you cannot travel due to a medical problem and describe what it is.

You're also covered if you have to cancel due to a death in the family (parent, spouse, child, sibling) or a family member's illness that requires you to care for that individual.
The insurance also offers secondary medical coverage.

We suggest you look at the Access America website for complete details.

Each of you needs to decide if you need insurance based on your particular circumstances.
The premium price of insurance is based upon tables that consider ranges of the cruise prices and ranges of passenger ages. The more a cruise costs and the older the passenger the higher the premium. Access America is an independent insurance company and up until about age 75-80 it's insurance is often less expensive than insurance offered by cruise lines and generally covers more things. If purchased within 14 days of deposit, Access America offers a pre-existing conditions waiver which cruise line insurance, except in rare cases, doesn't. You can purchase the insurance up until final payment without the pre-existing conditions waiver.

WHAT ABOUT DINING OPTIONS AND FORMAL NIGHTS?

This varies with the cruise lines. Some still do the traditional early (6 pm) and late (8 pm) seatings with assigned tables, but most offer an "open" dining option - meaning you can eat whenever you want (between 5:30 and 9:30 pm) and with whoever you want. Most (not all) still have at least one "formal" night, but if you don't want to schlepp that tux or sequined cocktail dress, there are multiple options. Again, choices!

WILL I GET SEASICK?

Unlikely. In this day and age, there are many homeopathic remedies and medications that you can take to combat motion sickness, plus all of the new ships are equpped with stabilizers that reduce the motion drastically. Booking early to secure a stateroom in the middle of the ship will help as well. Check with your physician, but unless you have an extreme sensitivity, you should not experience any difficulty.
